Hedgehogs

The Year 1 children have settled into the new academic year wonderfully and are showing a fantastic eagerness to learn. It has been a busy and productive start to the term, packed with exciting activities across the curriculum.

Our English journey began with John Bond’s delightful book, Mini Rabbit Not Lost. By reading just a few pages each lesson, we built suspense as the story unfolded. The children have explored describing settings and characters, writing command sentences and poems, and formulating thoughtful questions.

In Mathematics, we have been comparing and sorting numbers, using the part-whole model to see how numbers fit together. We have also reinforced number bonds within 10 and practiced foundational addition skills.

We have covered so much ground in our foundation subjects, too!

In History the children explored their personal chronologies and key life milestones by creating memory boxes and comparing birthday celebrations past and present.

In Science we investigated seasonal changes, tracking shifts in daylight hours, identifying key transformations, and linking them to seasonal celebrations.

In Art we explored line and shape, the children drew inspiration from artists Bridget Riley, Paul Klee, and Brianna McCarthy to create their own vibrant self-portraits.

In RE we learned about the significance of the Bible for Christians, exploring the seven-day creation story and reflecting on the wonders of our world.

In Computing the children have been practising logging into Chromebooks independently and learning how to stay safe online.

Beyond the classroom, Wild Wednesdays has been a massive hit! Every Wednesday, the children dive enthusiastically into our new weekly Gardening and Forest School sessions, connecting with nature and exploring the outdoors.

A huge well done to Hedgehogs class for such an amazingly positive start to the year. We are thrilled to be on this journey with you and look forward to a memorable, successful year ahead!
